Way cheaper than the bubble hockey games that go for over $1000 and still a lot of fun. Plus, the little plastic guys never go on strike !!!
The kids love it but some care is needed for the littlest kids so they don't bend the rods or break the players. I'd say from about age 8 or 9 and up should be fine with some basic "ground rules".
The three main ground rules for a long life are 1. Don't touch the players, just the rods; 2. Push the rods back in when you're done playing; and 3. Keep the puck in the goal when not in use. (I'm not sure where to get replacement pucks, I still have the original from my 1980 version.)
Younger than age 8 or 9 should probably be supervised by adults. Teens should really love it, especially if they are hockey fans.
Very cool game. Lots of teams available, too. I've loved this game for 30 years. In fact, my 25 year-old version is still working perfectly. The best part is that my kids (ages 6 through 15) love it just as much as I ever did.
Beats all those video games I don't understand.

This is not bubble hockey. We play bubble hockey and bubble hockey is insanely fun. But Bubble hockey is $1000. This is under $100. It is 100% quality plastic and it does need to be cared for. You will not bang on it or fling the rods, the way you can with Bubble hockey or foos ball, but it is tons of fun.
One big advantage I think over bubble hockey is - there is a real advantage in this game, the way it is designed, to team play and passing the puck. Straight shots on goal will have difficulty going in, but using the wings to pass to the center, if you pull off the center pass, you should be able to beat the goalie with easy.
The other big plus is the players are interchangeable. You can buy teams for about $10 and than change what team is playing what team every game.
Another fun one is that play starts by popping the puck out of the goal - if you do it just right, you can pop it with a perfect arch and it will land in your opponents goal - GOALIE SCORES! A fun little cheat!
A good game.

As a kid, I remember receiving the old, 2d version of this "rod-hockey" game. It was the Flyers vs the Rangers. It consisted of a similar platform, but the players were just flat, black plastic with stickers! The game was so vintage that the goalies still wore the Jason Vorhees goalie masks (or should I say the "Bernie Parent" mask), and the players didn't even wear helmets. Everybody should have had a #8 on their Jersey in the style of Brad Marsh!!! Anyway...eventually Sportcraft came along and put this very same 3d version of the game, and ultimately dveloped a few variants on it. For example, some didn't allow for passing the puck behind the net until tthey came up with the hinged rod (on a universal joint) that let's you set up passes to the slot from behind the net! I remember one of our teachers in Jr. High School - Mr. Stern - set up a table hockey league and the winner's got to keep the game at the end of the year! I personally went through about 4 of these as a teenager...just playing them so much that the components wore down.
I don't know who "Stiga" is as a manufacturer. They are apparently a European group that manufactures sledding gear and so on. Whatever their gig...they did a great job with the specs on this table hockey game. The rods slide smoothly. The gears don't mesh. The players rest level on their pegs so that their sticks don't scrape the ice. The "glass" behind the nets helps to keep quite a few stray wrist shots from flying across the room.
For anybody who always wanted (but couldn't afford or didn't have room for) a classic arcade version of Chexx (aka "Bubble Hockey"), then this is the ideal alternate for you. It's well worth every penny...and I am certain my son and I will get plenty of games in on this puppy before we wear it out. Seemingly even more so than the old Sportcraft version. Thanks to you, Stiga, for keeping this one available to us!

This is an excellent product! We got this for our son's 7th b-day present and we've already had hours of fun with it. Set-up was easy and the quality seems very good. The surface looks like ice, which allows the puck to glide, and the arena boards are decorated with the logos of all the NHL teams. At least one player can reach the puck at all times during play, so there are no "dead spots" on the ice. It's much like the game I remember as a kid, except that the flat metal and plastic players have been replaced with authentic-looking 3-D Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings players. The fact that my wife is from Ontario and grew up a Leafs fan adds to the excitement. Hockey fans will love the game, but any kid (and parent) who likes air hockey or foosball will enjoy the competition.

I ordered the Stiga hockey table as a surprise Christmas gift for my 2 sons, ages 15 and 23. They both think it's really cool and fun to play with, even in this age when video games rule! This table-top hockey table is very sturdy, and just the right size. The design of the table and players is very realistic, and you can even replace the teams that come with the table (the Red Wings and Maple Leafs) with your favorite teams (sold online). I highly recommend the Stiga hockey table as a family game for anyone (and not just hockey fans).

I don't know a right wing from a center, but this game is a BLAST! Nice to have an old-fashioned game that doesn't need a TV or even electricity. This game is of high quality, and if you should ever wear out parts you can order spare bits, right down to more hockey pucks or a new net. There's lots of websites out there too that give tips on how to lube the rods and tracks, make the ice surface extra slippery smooth and generally keep the game in tip-top shape. This game has lots of playability for for multiple generations. It develops hand-eye coordination in the younger crowd, but I'd recommend adult supervision with any kids that may be overly rough with their toys.

We got this as a Christmas gift for our 14 YO son. It has been a blast to play. It's kind of pricey but seems to be of good quality. The players are gear-driven rather than spring-driven so there is much less "give" in these players. They use a nifty little damper to keep the puck from hitting the back of the net and coming out - this avoids many discussions about whether the puck was in or not. The only issue we have had is that the players tend to ride upwards over the course of play. This results in the stick being too high off of the surface to hit the puck. You need to take a quick time out to reseat the players.

One has to be somewhat careful as the bars and the surface can be easily damaged; just as we did growing up. Access to the puck is better than old games and the increased size makes this even more fun. The puck extractor works well if the net is put together correctly.

This is a great tabletop hockey game - it brings back a lot of memories. The player action and coverage is superb, as the left winger can reach behind the opposition net, and the goalies can swivel and actually shoot the puck! My number one challenge is to score a goal by my goalie. The ice surface is actually a thin sheet of teflon so the puck moves really easily which makes for a fast game. There is no need to use a marble (ie an allie) or a wooden puck with a ball bearing implanted on the bottom. The game is rugged and stands up well as verified by the pounding it has taken from two sixty year old former teenagers!
I very highly recommend this STIGA game. I can see why this is the only tabletop hockey game endorsed by the NHL.

The board itself is a little flimsy but sitting on a solid surface it's not that noticeable.
The idea of buying different teams and replacing the players is also a plus.

18.) Well Engineered Non-Bubble Rod Hockey Game
Reviewed by: Bob IL United States
Rating:
We have had the game for 7 months with dozens of hours of play applied to the game.
Given that children today live in a digital age, this game provides much needed analog dexterity training for children. For example, given the position of the shooter relative to the goalie, the amount of angular rotation applied to the shooter (by twisting the rod) must have just the right angular acceleration to get a goal. It would be very difficult to have a signal processing algorithm equivalent for any video game.
It holds up to the roughest of play. Often young children (7 years old or less) accidentally apply force to a fully extended rod at a right angle (perpendicular) to the length of the rod - it holds up time and again without any observable bend to any of the rods.
One of the most impressive aspects to the design of the game is there are no dead spots anywhere with a puck flat against the ice; and if the puck is on its side I don't remember one time we had to manually intervene.
Every child who visits my son makes a stop at the hockey game. My nephews now have one of these given we have had some exciting matches.
The only negative is how the game was packed. I was surprised when I opened it that there wasn't any damage - there was no packing to protect the plastic frame from incurring impact damage. The game was in the box without packing material and the only thing separating the box from the outside world was a couple mil thick cardboard box. However it should be noted that the frame is made of a very malleable plastic that can withstand impact well (i.e. the kids provide significant impact force without any perceivable effect upon the game) Also the rods could have been taped to the frame to keep the rods from sliding around during shipping. However given all of my objections to packing, mine arrived with no damage at all.

This game is a True Classic!
I bought this game a week ago right here at Amazon. This game is great but I didn't buy it for me, I bought for my nephew (a real hockey fan) for Christmas. This is just like the one I remember playing with when I was his age. Much more fun then mechanical football. We used to get wild with this thing. I recall really abusing it and having a wild time and not breaking it. Face to face faceoff is much more fun than fantasy video games. We used to also do the game play by play as we fought it out on the 'ice.'
Alas this is not the exact same as the one I remember. First off are the players. I could swear that the old game had metal players and probably was less plastic than this one. The fact that you can get any NHL team for this set is a plus (my game came with the Redwings and the Leafs) so I will get the Flyers and the Devils for my nephew.
What's up with the PUCK? It's all plastic! Look, I haven't played with it since I bought the game as a gift but I don't see this little plastic thing can be as much fun as the original style puck. This was one of the best parts of the old game. If you never had this game before or don't recall, the old puck was a ball bearing inside a plastic ring. We used to play with the puck alone on my friend's basement using wood nok hockey sticks and homemade goals. This gave us a huge 'rink' and that little puck really flew! I know it was the piece that I kept well into adulthood. Oh, well, times change.
My one gripe with this purchase has nothing to do with the game itself. Amazon ships the game in the original box itself with no outer box. Unfortunately the condition it arrived in was not pristine, especially with the big UPS label right on it, and the black rubbing off the outside of the box. If you're like me and care about the condition the box is in, important if you're giving a gift, call and ask website how they pack the game. I wish I'd done that. Anyway, it doesn't make the game any less fun.

I'm not busting on the game but...the top needed to be secured better with glue. The players sticks are too thin that sometimes the shot goes right over the puck...these misgivings were all "tweaked" by gluing the top down better as previously mentioned and by adding pieces of plastic onto the business end of the sticks with epozy so that better contact was made with the puck.
Also, the pucks of old had a small ball bearing held within a hard plastin outter ring. You could maneuver that puck much, much better.
All in all though, my grandkids have left the video games and are now becoming hockey legions. A great, fast moving game. Provides much happiness.

I had this game when I was a kid way back in the 80's. It was awesome! Love love loved that game. So when my son showed interest in hockey, I immediately looked for this game's availability. I was very happy to see it offered on Amazon. The players were still three dimensional and the rods were the same placement as my game 20 years or so ago. However, the surface of the game itself has changed significantly. Originally, the game was a solid sheet of plastic that was molded into the shape of the rink, then the slots for the skaters were cut out. The game today is made with a sheet of plastic "surface" that sits atop a plastic frame. I'm sure the plastic used back in the 80's is more expensive than the junk they used to make this version, hence the paper-like thickness of the surface and the plastic frame. That's too bad because it REALLY takes away from the action of the puck. It used to be the standard on table hockey. I get nostalgia about this game so I can't say I don't enjoy playing it. But the overall quality of the game, to be cliche, isn't made the way it used to be.

I purchased this game based on the great reviews it was given here on Amazon and I was really disappointed when I received this product. This review will go against the grain of most here...
I originally purchased this for my two boys (and myself). My oldest son really got into hockey this year and I thought this would be a fun way to keep his interest during the offseason... (hey the Islander and Rangers didn`t make the playoffs so the seasons over). I also figured this would be a cool way to get my younger son (4) slowly into the game as he watched his older brother and me play. He wasn`t interested in playing in a league so I figured this may be the next best way to get him hooked.
The game arrived today and the first thing that struck me was when UPS delivered it, the game shipped in its original box. Considering it traveled 500+ miles, I can only imagine the drops and hits it took on its journey. The box was roughed up a bit but our excitement was still strong.
When we opened the box, my kids excitement grew but mine quickly gave way to disappointment.
After removing all the pieces and starting to construct the game, we discovered that several pieces were missing and the side boards had scuff marks on them as if it had spent some time next to someones sneaker so most likely we received a product that was used already and beaten up a bit.
Aside from this is the disappointment is the build quality which is really a shame. The only metal parts are the rods that control player movement. Aside from that, this product is made of thin plastic and the ice surface is a joke. I guess if you put the players on the rods, it`ll keep the plastic sheet on the game but we never got that far because we discovered that a leg was missing.
I cannot honestly write a good review on a product that costs $90 that is made of several pieces of plastic snapped together and a thin sheet of paper to mimic the ice surface. So tomorrow morning, this product will be returned, refunded and I`ll look elsewhere for something worth my $$$.
We also ordered several more teams just to make it more interesting and play a mini season but those teams did not arrive yet. When the Islanders and Blackhawks do get here, they`ll be wondering where the rink went.
Features of Stiga NHL Stanley Cup Hockey Table Game (Detroit Red Wings / Toronto Maple Leafs)
All players are 3-dimensional and wear the uniforms of two major teams. The teams have been added extra strength as in that the talent scouts have succeeded in recruiting two right-grip marksmen. Together with a left forward that can get back behind the opponents’ goal in “the Gretzky position” and a center forward that can go back into his own zone to build up the attack, there are all the prerequisites for taking your playing standard to new heights. Puck ejectors, plexi shields behind the net and goal counters go without saying in Stanley Cup.
Love the table hockey games of your youth but wary of the rickety construction? Turn to the Stiga NHL Stanley Cup table hockey game, a durable, high-quality, Swedish-made product that's designed to last a lifetime. The Stiga table is outfitted with a series of expertly crafted three-dimensional hockey players who wear the genuine NHL uniforms of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings (Stiga also sells players from the 28 other teams). As a result, you'll feel like you're actually in the arena, with the official NHL team colors, uniforms, and logos spread throughout the rink. In addition, the game plays better than the tables of your youth, with two right-grip marksmen, a left forward who can lurk behind the opponent's goal in the "Gretzky position," and a center forward who can go back into his own zone to build up the attack. And, of course, the game includes all the requisite puck ejectors, behind-the-net plexi-shield protectors, and goal counters one would expect from a top-quality NHL table hockey game. It's the best way to enjoy nonstop NHL action short of actually attending a game in person.
Other features include easy-to-move control rods, goalies that move from side to side, and 1.65-inch legs that lift the game off the table surface. The Stiga table measures 37 by 3 by 19.75 inches (W x H x D).
